As the son of a Slovak cinematographer and drummer, it only seemed natural that Vlad would follow in his father's footsteps. After spending the '80s in night clubs as a rock drummer, he shifted gears to a career as a journalist/photojournalist in the '90s. Before long, he felt the need to transition into a new direction, which found him joining Darryl Taylor and shortly thereafter, Trance Blackman, as the core creative team at RMG Recording Studios in Kelowna, BC – the foundation of what is now 3MG Productions.
Over the past 10 years, Vlad has adapted a particular event in Darryl's life into a screenplay for the film Butterfly and the Bee. The film will also feature a soundtrack of original music composed by Darryl, aka Maverick Blue.
“After finishing the screenplay, it just seemed like a natural progression to get the three of us to come together and produce it utilizing all of our skills and contacts.” And so, in the summer of 2024, 3MG Productions was founded. “My roles are that of a writer and video/film editor but will inevitably evolve into developing new skills like co-directing and co-producing.”
Vlad worked on several television pilots in the early 2000s, but none of them progressed beyond the pilot phase. “Butterfly and the Bee will definitely be the first major project I have been fortunate enough to work on, let alone create.”
As to the vision for and what the future holds for 3MG, Vlad offers, “I see a multi-faceted, full-blown production company involved in several projects simultaneously. I'm not concerned with others in the industry. We have some unique projects and skill levels, and we will focus on developing all aspects of our creations. Our success will ultimately set us apart from our competitors.”
Darryl has always loved to create. His multifaceted artistic background includes working as a voice producer and audio recording engineer for Alliance Atlantis/Discovery Channel. He’s composed music for Global Television and many other commercial productions, including video game scores, independent films and movie trailers, television productions, and radio advertising.
Most notably, he was voice producer and voice engineer for the Emmy Award-winning series Adoption Stories (2003). He’s won numerous awards for his music from Indie Music Channel Awards, a TVB Award of Canada for CASEY (Community Against Sexual Exploitation of Youth), and a number of other industry awards.
Darryl has for many years been a songwriter, musician, and record producer who has helped numerous recording artists discover and develop their styles, assisting them on their musical journeys. Today, in addition to producing original music and developing scores for film, he collaborates with world-renowned musicians as well as a Grammy Award-winning producer.
Naturally, his primary roles at 3MG Productions include music producer and composer. His vision for 3MG is to pursue original productions with a creative edge.
Creatively, Trance has been making music for his whole life. His father was a musician, and growing up they had a family band that played a few times a year for cultural club dances. He was the drummer. The seeds were planted early, and he started writing his own original music in his mid-teens.
His background in film and TV began with independent films in the Okanagan, in the southern interior of BC, Canada, when he collaborated with writer/director Neil A. Wentworth and his brother Nori for the feature films Manila Envelopes (2001) and Brothers Assassin (2003), as well as a number of short films and music videos. He garnered acting experience in two lead roles and wore many hats in post-production, specifically sound effects and design, music, and scoring. Joining the RMG Recording Studios crew around the same time afforded him the opportunity to produce his first studio records as well as collaborate on numerous media productions.
Later, he moved to Vancouver to pursue opportunities in the film industry, working primarily as a background performer on everything from low-budget indies to TV shows to $200 million-dollar sci-fi blockbusters. In 2010, he moved back to the Okanagan to help longtime friend James Blonde get his punk rock band sounding great for the stage. That collaboration led to him eventually joining the band, co-creating and co-producing a lifestyle TV pilot, Fit for a King, for which he was writer, cinematographer, and editor, as well as a “rockumentary” film about James, who, at 44, decided to start a punk rock band, The Saint James.
In the spring of 2023, Vlad reconnected with Trance and sent his rough draft script for Butterfly and the Bee, but it wasn’t until a year later that he got the revised draft that had him hooked. “It was a great beginning to a new chapter. I immediately wanted to make this movie. And it was timely and serendipitous for the three of us to smoothly gravitate back into each other's lives for the sake of producing our first independent feature film. Founding 3MG Productions only made sense to solidify our commitment to this project and others we’ve already started development on.”
“My roles at 3MG (short for ‘3 Musical Gentlemen’) include writing and producing, music production, as well as developing and pursuing my interests in other roles, namely directing. A good story is everything. It can change lives. Even more so if it’s delivered and presented masterfully. The film and screen industry is always in a state of flux, especially so in recent years. But there are always opportunities for quality, passion-infused stories to find their place in the world audience. I look forward to collaborating on captivating, entertaining, and memorable stories.”
